Acne pustules and cysts can leave behind scars and discolorations on the skin. These discolorations can cause the skin to appear blotchy and uneven. Luckily, there are many homemade and effective skin masks that can be applied to diminish the appearance of acne scars, and help them to disappear more quickly.
Using Baking Soda
Baking soda is a highly alkaline substance that helps to slough away dead skin cells without the need for abrasion, which can damage the skin’s surface. Acne scars are the result of damaged skin, whose dead skin cells can be sloughed away in this fashion. To use baking soda in a mask, mix 2 tbsp. of baking soda with around 1 tsp. of water. This will create a paste that should be spread onto the skin that contains scarring. Leave the baking soda mask on the skin for at least 5 minutes, then rinse the mask away with water. A baking soda mask can be used 2 times per week to help eliminate acne scars.
Applying an oil mask to the skin helps loosen the dead cells on the surface of the face, which can significantly improve the skin’s natural ability to dislodge and slough away scarred skin cells. Only non-comedogenic oils should be used, such as Castor or olive oil, which will not clog the pores. The oil mask of choice should be massaged deeply onto the skin for 2 minutes, then allowed to remain on the skin for 10 more minutes. Then, a washcloth should be dipped into steaming hot water and wrung out, then draped over the face. The steam will further loosen and soften the skin. After the washcloth cools, use it to remove any remaining oil. An oil mask can be used every day to treat acne scars.
Using Lemon Juice
A lemon juice mask is extremely acidic, and contains high levels of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps the skin rebuild new skin cells while gently helping to slough away scarred cells. Applying concentrated lemon juice to acne scars is an easy and cost effective way to treat the skin with vitamin C. To use a lemon juice mask, soak 5 to 6 cotton pads in concentrated lemon juice, then drape them onto the face; at least 2 for the forehead, 1 for the chin and 2 for the cheeks. Allow the cotton pads to sit on the skin for at least 10 minutes, then remove them. Allow the skin to air dry. You can use a lemon juice mask up to 3 times per day to treat acne scars.
