A pinched nerve in the shoulder can be excruciating. Pain medication can be taken to alleviate the ache, but that just covers up the pain instead of healing the injury. A doctor should always be consulted before trying any home remedies because pinched nerves in the neck or shoulder can be an indication of more serious illnesses, such as inflamed spinal joints or spondylitis.

Honey and Cinnamon

Honey and cinnamon both have been known to contain ingredients that help alleviate, if not cure, some afflictions. A way to use these two ingredients to help alleviate pinched nerve pain is to mix honey and cinnamon into a paste. Apply the mixture to the spot that hurts and leave it on for at least 10 minutes, then wash it off with water. The only side effect of this mixture is that it might leave the skin slightly red. Pair this with sitting up straight and sleeping without a pillow for more successful results.

Hot Water

Water can also be used to help relieve pain from a pinched shoulder nerve. Applying a hot water bottle to the affected area is a good way to lessen pain. You can also sit in a hot bath. One of the most therapeutic water treatments is the use of a hot tub with spray jets.

Hot Oil Massage

Although not typically used in aromatherapy because of the heaviness of the texture and odor, olive oil has been known to have healing properties. People suffering from arthritis have used olive oil to massage their joints. Heat up about a half cup of olive oil to the point where it is hot, but comfortable to the touch. Then have another person pour the oil into their hands (not onto your back) and massage the painful area. The heat along with healing properties of olive oil should help alleviate symptoms.


A possible cause of a pinched nerve is lack of calcium in your diet. Vitamins can be taken as a solution to calcium deficiency, but you can also make a change in your diet. Calcium-enriched foods such as milk, yogurt, cheeses, nuts, fish and grains are important for strong bone and joint health. Soy milk is also rich in calcium, and you can purchase it at any grocery store in vanilla, plain or chocolate.


Potassium deficiency is also a possible reason for a pinched nerve in the shoulder or neck. Again, vitamins can be taken to amend this, but diet is also a huge factor. Potassium-enriched foods include bananas, avocados, figs, papaya and watermelon. Acidic foods could be a culprit for pinched nerves, so regular breakfasts, lunches and dinners that include potassium-enriched foods are recommended.
