Plenty of women all over the world suffer from low libido or lack of a sex drive. Increasing libido in women can be as simple as adding an herb to a diet. Some reasons why an increase in libido is needed may include stress, blood circulation, testosterone levels, anxiety and nitric oxide levels (the chemical needed for blood flow to female sexual organs).
Dong quai or Chinese angelica is the most common herb used to increase libido in women. This herb is considered the “female ginseng” and has been used to treat feminine problems such as menstrual cramps, hot flashes, uterine bleeding and abnormal menstruation. It increases libido in women because of the balancing effect it has on the hormonal system. The powdered root of dong quai can be taken in tea, tincture, tablet or capsule form.
Siberian ginseng increases libido in women because it produces hormonal effects similar to estrogen. This can be beneficial to a woman who has a low libido from high testosterone levels. Siberian ginseng is an herb which stimulates the immune system and causes an increase in stamina. Both causes are beneficial to increasing libido in women.
Among the safest herbs for increasing libido in women is ginkgo biloba. Libido is affected by blood circulation to the sex organs. When blood circulation is sluggish or slow then a low libido might be the result. Ginkgo biloba is known as a blood circulation herb because it improves blood and oxygen flow in the body. Ginkgo biloba also improves mood, reduces stress, enhances concentration, reduces tension and boosts energy, all the items needed to increase libido in women.
Controversy surrounds use of the herb damiana for increasing libido in women. Although no studies prove that the herb works, it has been widely touted as a sexual stimulant and aphrodisiac. Native to Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean, damiana is considered to be a multipurpose herb treating everything from infertility to depression. Damiana is commonly served in tea form although it can also be smoked for a relaxing effect.
