Both red and white wines have a substantial number of health benefits. It is only when not used in moderation that wine becomes disadvantageous to your health. The overuse of white wine or any type of alcohol is harmful to one's health. In moderation, white wine can improve heart and lung health, as well as a variety of other ailments, but simply because white wine is a form of alcohol, drinking too much of it can have detrimental effects.

Liver Disease

White wine is not inherently bad for you in the realm of liver disease or otherwise. Drinking one glass of white wine daily actually has a significant number of proven health benefits. However, white wine is still a form of alcohol, and any form of alcohol overuse is detrimental to your health. It can lead to liver disease, which is an effect of long-term alcohol use, especially when alcohol is drunk in excess. One of the jobs of the liver is to filter out any impurities from the bloodstream, and an excess of alcohol makes it impossible for the liver to carry out this job. This can lead to complete liver failure, which can result in death.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders

White wine does not have any specific properties that yield Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Rather, it is simply due to the nature of white wine being a form of alcohol that it can lead to these disorders. Drinking any form of alcohol, including white wine, while pregnant has been demonstrated to have detrimental effects on the baby. Children who were exposed to alcohol while in the womb are more likely to become alcoholics, often have birth defects, experience stunted growth, and have a variety of learning and behavioral problems.

Cancer

Some studies have suggested that drinking alcohol may increase the risk of cancer. Studies conducted by the National Cancer Institute have linked alcohol consumption, including white wine, with breast cancer in women who have gone through menopause. This is because alcohol increases estrogen production, which is correlated with breast cancer, and also causes tumors to grow more rapidly. However, drinking white wine in moderation is significantly less likely to yield cancer. Rather, a small amount of white wine daily is actually beneficial to your health.

Weight Gain

Since white wine contains calories and is a form of alcohol, drinking a significant amount may lead to weight gain. Once again, there is nothing about white wine itself that causes weight gain. It is simply due to the nature of white wine being a form of alcohol that it may lead to weight gain. If you intake more calories than you are burning throughout a given day, then the result will be weight gain. Also, since alcohol slows your metabolism, drinking white wine will simultaneously be an addition of calories while your body is less able to break them down.
