Eczema -- which is characterized by swollen, itchy, red patches of skin -- isn't life-threatening, but it can be extremely uncomfortable. This disorder is common, which is why many people turn towards home remedies to ease their symptoms. While home remedies can never replace the care of an actual doctor, many people believe that Himalayan salt, a natural, unprocessed salt, can help ease symptoms. More research is needed to prove its effectiveness on eczema.

Himalayan Salt

Himalayan salt is a natural, unprocessed salt that's said to be over 250 million years old. It's frequently used in different bath products and as a replacement for regular table salt. Though research has not been definitive, some people swear by Himalayan salt's health benefits. According to Dr. Edward Group, the COO and founder of the Global Healing Center, Himalayan salt is healthier than table salt because it does not contain toxins and has 84 different minerals, which give the salt its pink hue.

Causes of Eczema

Eczema can flair up for a number of reasons, which is why a homeopathic remedy shouldn't replace a professional exam. If you suffer from chronic or persistent eczema, you could have a serious allergy. Something as simple as eliminating a certain food from your diet can help. Many eczema cases aren't the result of a food allergy. They're caused by irritation to the skin or severe dryness, which is why moisture eases symptoms. Itching and scratching can make eczema worse or turn regular dry skin into an eczema patch.

Himalayan Salt as a Topical Treatment

Many people claim that Himalayan salt has benefits when absorbed through the skin, which is why it's included in many bath products. Some claim a Himalayan salt bath can help ease chronic disorders like arthritis, psoriasis and herpes outbreaks, as well as cure skin rashes such as eczema and contact dermatitis. Medicated creams are much more effective at easing eczema, and a salt bath will only provide short-term relief. It cannot cure a chronic ailment, so it's important to consult your doctor.

Salt Baths for Eczema

The National Association of Eczema recognizes salt baths as an effective method to ease eczema symptoms. Table salt, Epsom salt or Himalayan salt can be used, though Epsom salt, also known as magnesium sulfate, is regarded as the most effective. If you want to use salt to help ease symptoms, mix 1 cup of salt with your bath. Soak in the bath for 10 minutes to let the water absorb into your skin. Eczema is often caused by dryness, so moisture can dramatically reduce the severity of an outbreak.
