During aging, skin thins and becomes less elastic and prone to fine lines, creases and sagging. Sun exposure and genetics can also damage the collagen and elastin that contribute to the skin’s integrity. Essential oils may help maintain the skin’s elasticity and, according to Diane Worwood, author of “The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy,” improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. She recommends starting a skin care regimen when young, to keep the skin firm. Always mix essential oils with a base oil, such as vitamin E, and avoid applying the oils in the delicate area around the eyes.
Oils for Young Skin
People with younger skin, such as those in their 20s, tend to have firm skin and few wrinkles. However, these people may benefit from a preventive blend of neroli, lavender and fennel oils, combined with geranium, German chamomile and carrot. According to Colleen K. Dodt, author of “The Essential Oils Book,” these oils prevent premature aging and maintain the skin’s natural elasticity.
Oils for the First Signs of Aging
Those in their 30s may notice fine lines around the mouth and on the forehead. While not deep, these lines lay the foundation for deeper lines later. Worwood recommends a blend of patchouli, yarrow and clary-sage with palma rosa, fennel and rose to hide the initial signs of aging.
Oils for the Deeper Signs of Aging
Women in their 40s may notice sagging skin, or “jowls,” around the mouth and chin in addition to deeper lines across the forehead. To firm the skin, and reduce the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles, Dodt recommends neroli, lavender and rosemary mixed with frankincense, fennel and lemon.
Oils for Advanced Signs of Aging
For skin with advanced signs of aging, such as with those over 50 or with extensive sun damage, Worwood recommends a blend of geranium, rose and violet leaf with lavender, galbanum and myrrh. These oils may help restore elasticity, firm the skin and improve the appearance of fine “crepe paper” wrinkles that often occur in older skin.
