On Saturday, November 18th at 3:42am PST, the New Moon in Scorpio will be at its peak.

What is a New Moon?

A New Moon occurs when the Moon is hidden between the Sun and Earth and its face is hidden from view.

What does the New Moon represent?

The New Moon is the first phase in the Lunar Cycle. As this lunation ushers in a new cycle, it also ushers in fresh energy for us to work through challenges old and new.

What does this particular New Moon have to offer?

The New Moon’s lack of light leaves us in an uneasy state of darkness. Darkness has always been a hard place for human minds and spirits. It is easier to project our fears onto dark spaces because what lies before us and behind us is unknown. This New Moon is the best time of the entire year to mend your relationship with the dark and become comfortable with the unknown, again. So many tragedies have befallen this planet recently and most of these events remind us of our complete lack of control. They remind us that the light just illuminates issues, it doesn’t give us any say in its existence.

Scorpio is a water sign ruled by some of the toughest planets of them all, Mars and Pluto. Scorpio is not afraid of the dark because it knows that mystery is magic. It knows the power the lies within things that exist just beyond human reach. Scorpio knows that this world is chaos with only the illusion of control. Coming to terms with darkness is Scorpio’s specialty.

This New Moon, ask yourself: what would I do if I accepted my lack of control? Oftentimes, humans refrain from certain activities, from releasing projects and from approaching certain people because of their lack of control over the outcome of the situation. We so are terrified of the unknown to the point of often ruling things that haven’t been proven by science or “trusted figures” out as “false.” Reacquainting ourselves with spaces of darkness is of the utmost importance if we are going to not only succeed, but be able to understand and celebrate our success.

Your challenge this New Moon is to sit in the dark.

Literally. Sit in a room with no light and no sound by yourself. Take a few deep breaths once you have settled into that space and take note of how your body starts to feel surrounded by darkness. If you start to feel anxious or scared, interrogate why. What is different about a room that was once completely visible and bathed in light now that it is blackened? Sit for as long as you can in the discomfort of the darkness, just noticing. Not trying to change how you feel, just noticing what comes up. Contrarily, if the darkness settles well with you, take note of that, too. After at least five minutes, turn on some light and free-write about your experiences, about fear and how it may be holding you back in your life right now. Clear all of the anxiety and frustration out through brutally honest writing and deep breath. If you felt comforted by the dark and are unafraid of the unknown, describe that experience in your writing. Come back to that feeling of serenity, or read your journal entry and try to find that space again, whenever you are feeling uneasy. Whether it be the outcome of a project, conversation, etc that you want to follow through with but have felt held back by fear of the outcome, let your relationship to darkness and the unknown help guide you through.

Use this Moon and the end of Scorpio season as an exercise of acknowledgement. Acknowledge your feelings, your frustrations and your fears, don’t push them or or silence them. Commit to doing what you feel called to. This is a powerful time and you are a powerful being. You have all of the license in the world to embrace your fear and lack of control. Step into this practice knowing that when you do, your power is limitless. Happy New Moon!
