Bananas are an excellent source of potassium and are a portable and healthy snack. Unfortunately, they go from ripe to overripe very quickly and can attract fruit flies and other bugs. If you have overripe bananas and need to use them, there are many different ways to avoid throwing them away. If you have a bit of time and a few simple ingredients, you can turn your black bananas into delicious treats.
Baking is one of the most common ways to use overripe or black bananas. Of course, you can bake banana bread with overripe bananas. However, you can also bake banana muffins, banana cookies or even banana brownies. Just mash up the bananas and add them to your recipe. Black bananas will mash even more easily if you freeze them and let them defrost before you bake. You can even bake the bananas themselves. Simply slice them, coat the bananas in melted butter, sprinkle with cinnamon and brown sugar and bake in the oven for about 20 minutes.
You can freeze black bananas for later baking or other uses to prevent them from being wasted. Peel the bananas before you freeze them and lay them on a cookie sheet. After the bananas freeze solid, store them in a resealable bag in the freezer for six to eight months. Alternatively, slice the bananas and freeze them solid, then store them in a bag for later snacking. You can also use frozen bananas to make banana ice cream.
Add black or overripe bananas to the blender the next time you make a healthy smoothie. The banana will give your smoothie a creamy texture without the added calories of ice cream. Make a strawberry banana smoothie or a tropical smoothie with mango, orange juice and a banana. If you want to make a healthy treat for your kids, blend a banana with some juice and fruit, and pour the mixture into Popsicle molds. In a few hours you will have a healthy and delicious Popsicle.
Slice overripe bananas into thin slices and bake them in an oven at 150 degrees Fahrenheit for eight to 10 hours to make banana chips. You can also do this with a dehydrator if you have one. Slice your bananas and make peanut butter and banana or honey and banana sandwiches. Blend bananas, milk, nutmeg and some heavy cream to make banana soup. As a very last resort, place the bananas next to your plants for fertilizer. Rose bushes respond particularly well to this.
