Since the 1960s, Spankies has referred to spandex or Lycra briefs, worn under short cheerleading skirts. These tight fitting, butt-hugging, barely there shorts cover the essentials when kicking and performing jumps, but still provide full range of motion. Other athletes, including runners and volleyball players, have adopted spankies to wear alone or underneath performance skirts. Teen girls also wear spankies as shapewear under their clothing.
Spankies as Fashion
Teens wear spankies as shapewear to give a slimmer appearance to their backsides and waists. Girl lacrosse players admitted to “ABC News” that they wear them both on and off the field. The briefs are the equivalent of adult shapewear, which smoothes out any unsightly bulges under form-fitting clothes.
