There are different schools of thought when it comes to these support garments and their significance. Support Over Time
It’s a sad truth, but there’s nothing you can do to stop gravity and time. Breasts are held together by ligaments, which weaken over time, leading to sagging. Wearing a bra, however, can help slow down the process and keep your breasts perkier longer.
Fitting Your Lifestyle
Ladies with larger breasts especially can benefit from the support of wearing a bra. The larger your breasts, the more they can weigh on your back. Wearing a bra can help to alleviate some of this stress. Bra straps only provide 10 percent overall support, so really focus on the body of the bra. Bras should fit firmly around you and should be level in the back. Find the size that supports you best by going to a lingerie store and getting fitted.
Bras While Working Out
A properly fitted bra is crucial when working out. Sports bras are your best bet, as they’re specifically designed to absorb the shock your breasts experience when bouncing during exercise. Your sports bra should fit comfortably and shouldn’t be too worn. If your bra starts feeling loose, it’s time to throw it out and get another.
Bras in Bed
No research shows that wearing a bra to bed will make any difference in regard to sagging. If you feel more comfortable wearing a bra while sleeping, opt for soft-cup bras with no underwire or metal clasps. It’s also important to wear a bra that has the right fit. An ill-fitting bra can cause breast tissue to lay on your chest, trap sweat and cause chaffing and rashes.
Challenge to the Rule
A 2013 French study claims that women would actually have less sagging without the use of bras. Initial research shows that bras hinder breast ligament growth and can actually make them weaker. The study sampled 330 women over 15 years and measured the changes in their breasts. It found that women who didn’t wear bras ended up with firmer breasts than those who didn’t. Many doctors don’t accept this theory, however, and still recommend wearing bras to help combat gravity.
