Mrs. Dash is a line of salt-free seasoning blends created by Carol Bernick in the 1980s. According to the Mrs. Dash website there are 14 different varieties of Mrs. Dash. These include the original mixture, garlic and herb, southwest chipotle and blends specifically for steak, chicken or burgers. Many cooks and imitators have tried to replicate the taste of the original Mrs. Dash by using the seasonings listed on the container.
Use the spices -- all of which are common -- listed as ingredients on the bottle to replicate the flavor of the original Mrs. Dash. They are onion, black pepper, parsley, basil, celery seed, bay, marjoram, oregano, savory, coriander, thyme, cayenne pepper, cumin, dry mustard, rosemary, garlic, carrot, orange peel, tomato, lemon juice powder, citric acid and oil of lemon. Top Secret Recipes recommends using dried vegetable flakes in place of the carrot and tomato and unsweetened powdered lemonade or powdered lemon juice for the citrus flavor. These can be purchased in bulk at health food stores or Asian food stores.
Purchasing spices in bulk will be less expensive than prepackaged spices and ensures that your spices are fresh. If you are using whole spices such as celery seed or coriander seed, toast the spices briefly in a toaster oven. This will help to bring out their flavors. After toasting, grind the spices in a blade-style coffee grinder or mortar and pestle. Mix the spices in a small bowl, cover and shake to blend thoroughly.
