A sundae bar provides people with an array of ice cream sundae ingredients so everybody can choose the items they want to include on their ice cream. Set vanilla ice cream, and other flavors if desired, in coolers at the end of the table, and arrange a variety of toppings in bowls along the spread.
Set out bowls of bite-sized candies or candy pieces for people to sprinkle over or mix into their ice cream. Small candies to consider include M&M’s, Skittles, Reese’s Pieces, gummy bears, chocolate chips, miniature marshmallows and chocolate-covered espresso beans. Break up larger candies, such as Butterfinger bars, Heath bars and peppermint patties into bite-sized chunks. Break cookies, graham crackers and brownies into small pieces that people can sprinkle over their ice cream.
Set out a variety of fresh and dried fruits. Berries are common ice cream toppings, with strawberries, blueberries and raspberries as the primary options. Provide bananas halved lengthwise to make banana splits. Less traditional fruits to include on sundaes include peaches, mangoes, kiwi and apple. Dried varieties of these fruits are also appropriate ice cream toppings. Don’t forget a bowl of pitted cherries at the end of the sundae bar as the final touch.
Provide a variety of syrups for guests to drizzle over their ice cream. Classic chocolate syrup is a must-have at a sundae bar. Caramel sauce is another common topping. If you make your own caramel, add milk so it remains soft enough to drizzle or keep it warm so it doesn’t set. You can also provide butterscotch syrup and fruit-flavored syrups, such as strawberry or blueberry.
Chopped peanuts, walnuts, pecans and pistachios all work well on ice cream sundaes. Slivered almonds bring an elegant appearance. You can also provide peanut butter, which tastes great on a banana split. Toasted coconut flakes pair well with tropical fruits for an island-inspired sundae. Lastly, a big bowl of fresh whipped cream and a variety of colored sprinkles let guests put the finishing touches on their sundaes.
