If you’re looking for an effective way to get rid of age spots on your skin’s surface, then you may want to consider going for microdermabrasion. A microdermabrasion treatment exfoliates your skin with the use of an abrasive material, such as diamonds or crystals.

Pick a location to receive microdermabrasion. Although spas do offer the treatment, you’re better off going for a medical grade microdermabrasion treatment. Locate a certified dermatologist in your area through the Society for Dermatology’s Web site (see Resources below).

Meet with your dermatologist for a consultation. Discuss your treatment needs and let him know you wish to reduce or eliminate the appearance of your age spots. He’ll set up your first treatment after the initial consultation.

Undergo your first microdermabrasion session. Your doctor will clean your skin and then use a special rotary wand to blast your face with the abrasive crystals. This will exfoliate your skin and stimulate the rejuvenation process.

Expect multiple sessions of microdermabrasion. You won’t get rid of age spots after only a session or two. On average, you’ll need four to six microdermabrasion sessions for smaller age spots to go away. Larger spots may take as many as 12 microdermabrasion treatments to fade.

Add chemical peels. If microdermabrasion does not make your age spots disappear, you may want to ask your dermatologist about combining the treatment with a chemical peel.

  • For prevention of age spots, you should follow basic skincare guidelines. Avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen with a high SPF.

  • You can try a home microdermabrasion kit as well to try and get rid of age spots. Many consumers have found success with the Neutrogena Advanced Solutions at Home Microdermabrasion Kit.
