During pregnancy or rapid weight gain, your skin stretches. After giving birth or quickly losing the excess weight, the collagen and elastin fiber in your skin are altered. They are unable to go back to the way they were before. You may appear slimmer, but you will still feel self-conscious about your body because of that unsightly, loose, sagging skin around your waist. To get rid of the loose skin there are several things you can do, ranging from eating a healthy diet and getting exercise to plastic surgery.
Things You'll Need
Eat a healthy diet that contains plenty of skin-plumping protein. Protein from products such as nuts, legumes, milk and beans, contains isoflavones that help prevent the breakdown of collagen. Protein from fish, such as tuna, salmon, trout and sardines, contains omega-3 fatty acids, which preserves the skin’s collagen and keeps skin looking youthful.
Drink plenty of water to hydrate the skin and to maintain its elasticity. Loose, sagging skin can appear dry, and drinking water can prevent this. Drink between eight and 12 cups of water daily.
Perform regular cardiovascular and strength-training exercise. Cardiovascular exercise, such as running, swimming and biking, will promote blood circulation and eliminate toxins from the skin. Strength-training exercises will help tone and tighten your loose skin and promote fat loss from your body. Take on a whole body approach and include exercises such as pushups, crunches, lunges, squats, elbow-to-knee crunches, biceps curls and bench dips.
Scrub your skin with a loofah while taking a shower. Exfoliating your skin will get rid of dead skin cells and promote new skin generation.
Massage a skin-firming lotion into your skin to help build up its elasticity. Look for lotions with ingredients such as aloe vera, soy protein, yeast extract, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, vitamin A and vitamin C.
Consider undergoing abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, to restore your figure closer to the way it was before. A tummy tuck can be combined with liposuction to get rid of any excess fat around your middle.
