It may seem like a pipe dream for every slightly too tall, perfectionist bride -- but rumor has it, you can cut high heels down to more manageable size, whether for looks or comfort. While you can't turn your skyscraper stilettos into flats, you can sometimes make the heels just a little less high. Leave the details to the professionals, however.

Baby Steps

Shoes are designed with the heel height in mind, so making them shorter doesn't always work. It's a matter of balance and also one of construction. Spike heels often have metal pins and shanks -- the support that connects heel to arch. Some, unfortunately, can't be altered. Take the shoes to a shoe repair shop for a diagnosis. Most will say a half inch or so -- an inch tops -- is the limit for cutting the heels down.
