There are a number of reasons bags might occur under the eyes. Baggy eyes come as a natural part of ageing, but they can be caused by lack of sleep and stress as well. While it isn’t always possible to prevent or get rid of bags under your eyes completely, it is possible to reduce or temporarily eliminate them without spending a lot of money or having major facial work done by a doctor.
Things You'll Need
Sleep at least eight hours a night if possible. Lack of sleep is one of the leading causes of bags under the eyes. If you make a habit of getting regular sleep, the bags under your eyes will be minimal or even nonexistent. This is the most effective way of preventing bags under the eyes in the first place.
Eat healthier. Cutting down on your sodium intake and removing greasy foods from your diet can help reduce bags under your eyes. Eating foods high vitamin A, B and C, and staying hydrated can help reduce swelling under the eyes. Eating whole, fresh foods rather than processed foods.
Place a cold compress over your eyes for 10 to 15 minutes, twice a day. This will get rid of the bags under your eyes temporarily. The cold reduces the swelling. This will only last for 3 to 5 hours at a time, but it is ideal for getting rid of bags under your eyes when you are going to be in public and you have no other alternative. Cold cucumbers and chilled tea bags may also provide temporary relief, but, according to Ellen Marmur, MD, chief of dermatologic and cosmetic surgery at the Mt. Sinai Medical Center, “. . . it’s really the cold that is working. It’s temporarily taking down the swelling.”
Clean your face and apply a skin moisturizer daily. This can help reduce the size of bags under your eyes and can make it less likely bags will occur, providing you use the moisturizer in conjunction with proper sleep. While regular cleaning and moisturizing is a healthy way to treat your face, there is no magic ingredient for eliminating bags if you don’t get proper sleep
Botox treatments and plastic surgery are the only permanent methods of removing bags under the eyes, but these methods can be expensive and often require maintenance work.
