Sometimes when you get a tattoo, scarring happens. It can be caused by anything from improper aftercare to sensitive skin. Aloe, however, can minimize the look of a scare from a tattoo. Using aloe directly from a plant gives you the best results.

Identify the scar. Scarring under a tattoo can be tricky to spot sometimes because ink can distort the look of your skin. But, if your skin is raised up, and it’s past the normal healing time, you probably have a scar.

Buy an aloe plant. Most gardening stores or nurseries carry the plant. They can also be found at discount stores with gardening departments. You shouldn’t need a huge plant to minimize your scar, but be sure the one you choose has several thick, healthy leaves. You will have to alternate between several leaves because the aloe plant will need time to heal itself between tears.

Tear off a small piece of the plant and squeeze the aloe directly on your tattoo. Rub the aloe into the scar and allow it to dry completely. Repeat the process several times a day until your tattoo is flatter and less scarred.

Be patient. Healing takes several weeks. But, if after enough time your scar isn’t reduced to a acceptable level, consider visiting a doctor to talk about laser resurfacing options.

  • Don’t forget the plant! Make sure the plant gets plenty of water and is kept in a spot with a lot of light. During the summer months, the plant may be moved outdoors.
