Cake balls are a treat to serve at a birthday party, family gathering or other social event. The sweet desserts are easy to make and you can customize the treats by using your choice of cake mixes, icing and edible decorations. Satisfy those chocolate cravings by making the cake balls from chocolate cake, chocolate icing and a coating of milk chocolate or make a colorful treat with rainbow cake mix, a white chocolate coating and colorful sprinkles.

Prepare the Cake Balls

Prepare a store-bought cake mix according to the package instructions. Grease the sides and bottom of two 8-inch round or square cake pans and pour the cake batter into the pans.

Bake the cakes according to package instructions. Remove the cakes from the oven and cool in the pans for 20 to 30 minutes. Take the cakes out of the pans and cool completely.

Tear the cakes into chunks and put all of the chunks into a large mixing bowl. Break up the cake with a fork until only crumbs remain.

Pour about half of a can of store icing into the mixing bowl and mix it into the crumbs. Add more icing until the cake and icing mixture stays together when you shape it into balls.

Cover a serving tray with a piece of wax paper. Shape the cake and icing mixture into balls about 1-inch in diameter and place them on the serving tray. Place the cake balls in the refrigerator for 30 to 45 minutes to become firm.

Decorate the Cake Balls

Fill three to four bowls with edible embellishments, such as sprinkles, confectioners’ sugar, toasted coconut and edible glitter.

Melt 1 cup of milk chocolate over a double boiler. Dip about 1/2 of the cake balls into the chocolate. Let the excess chocolate drip off the cake balls and then roll them in your choice of edible embellishments.

Place the decorated cake balls back on the wax paper.

Melt 1 cup of white chocolate over a double boiler and dip the remaining half of the cake balls into the chocolate. Let the excess chocolate drip off, roll them in the edible embellishments and place them back on the tray.

Cool the cake balls in the refrigerator for 30 to 40 minutes and then keep them cool until ready to serve.
