Trying to brush hair that is full of tangles can be downright painful. No matter how gently you brush, let’s face it, it’s going to hurt. And the bummer about tangles? They keep coming back! Rather than buying yet another haircare product, make your own detangling spray using natural ingredients that will condition your hair, like marshmallow root and argan oil.

Combine marshmallow root with 2 cups filtered water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Marshmallow root is what gives this spray its natural detangling power. It creates a slippery texture when boiled, and the herb also works to condition hair and promote growth.

Tips

You can either use dried or powdered marshmallow root. You can find both dried and powdered options online or in health food stores. If using capsules, open up enough of the pills to get 2 tablespoons of powdered herb. If using dried herbs, measure out 1/2 cup.

Strain out the herbs with cheesecloth or a paper towel. Squeeze the cloth to get all the liquid from the herbs.

Add 1 tablespoon of argan oil and 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to the marshmallow root infusion.

Argan oil conditions and moistures hair while apple cider vinegar removes product build-up and smoothes the hair cuticle, creating lots of shine.

Tips

It’s a lot easier to add the apple cider vinegar and argan oil to the marshmallow root infusion before you pour the mixture into the spray bottle. Unless you have a funnel, it’s hard to not make a mess!

Give the ingredients a stir, and then pour into a spray bottle and shake well.

Optionally, you can also add three to five drops of essential oil, if desired. Rosemary oil is commonly used to strengthen hair, but oils like lavender, chamomile or peppermint would also be fine.
