Face scrubs, which exfoliate dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, are an important part of a beauty regimen. Face scrubs are available commercially, but they can be pricey and filled with chemicals, fragrances and dyes. If you’d like to save on your skincare expenses while using health-promoting natural products, making a natural face scrub may suit your needs. It’s best to prepare a facial scrub each time you use it so that the ingredients are always fresh.

Combine natural ingredients commonly found in the kitchen. Mix the steel-cut oats, sea salt, lemon juice, almond flour and yogurt in a small bowl. You can substitute cornmeal or baking soda for the almond flour.

Add additional ingredients specific to your skin’s needs. For instance, if your skin is dry, add avocados and honey for their moisturizing effects. If you have acne, add tea tree oil for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Stir the ingredients until they are well combined.

Use the mixture immediately as an exfoliating scrub, using a loofah if you have one, and massaging the scrub into your skin for at least 30 seconds. You can also leave it on your face as a rejuvenating mask for five to 10 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water.


  • When using new ingredients in a facial scrub, test a small patch of skin on the inside of your arm and wait 24 hours to make sure you don’t have any allergic reactions or side effects.

  • For best results, open your pores first by steaming your face over a bowl of hot water or by covering your face with a clean, warm washcloth for several minutes.
