When you have paid for a salon-perfect manicure or polished your nails to perfection at home, you obviously want to keep them chip-free and gorgeous for as long as possible. You can help nail polish stay on for longer by paying careful attention to detail and adding some simple techniques to your existing manicure routine.

Things You'll Need

Massage a dot of cuticle cream into each cuticle, using a circular motion. With an orange wood stick, gently ease back the cuticles to remove all dead skin from the nail and create a smooth surface.

Dip your hands into a bowl of warm, soapy water to remove all traces of oil and debris from the nails. Dry your hands thoroughly, and gently rub each nail with a soft, lint-free cloth to make a clean and dry surface.

Apply an even layer of basecoat to each nail, and allow it to dry.

Apply a thin layer of your chosen nail polish. Allow it to dry thoroughly, and then apply a second thin layer. Allow it to dry.

Apply an even layer of slow-drying topcoat to each nail. Allow time for the topcoat to dry thoroughly, and then dip your fingers into a bowl of cold water for a couple of minutes.

Tips

  • File nails in one direction only by using a smooth, salon-quality emery board.

  • Apply a thin layer of topcoat each day.

  • Prolong the lifespan of your nail polish by storing it in a cold place, such as the refrigerator.
