If you have celiac disease and are on a gluten free diet, soft flour tortillas can be one of the most difficult foods to make. Most corn tortillas are gluten free naturally and are a great substitute at home and at Mexican restaurants. But flour tortillas are almost always made with wheat flour. Here is a recipe to make flour tortillas gluten free.

Things You'll Need

Combine the dry ingredients in large bowl and mix thoroughly.

Add water to the mixture and mix with your hands.

Separate the dough into 6 to 8 equal parts. Roll them into balls, just larger than the size of a golf ball.

Place a ball of dough in the center of a sheet of wax paper. Flatten with your hand. Cover with another sheet of wax paper. Roll it with a rolling pin into a circle about 8 inches in diameter.

Carefully remove the top layer of wax paper.

Flip the tortilla over (dough side down) onto a hot pan (medium heat) and pull the wax paper away. Be careful not to touch the pan with your hand.

Cook your tortillas on each side until they are golden brown. Serve them immediately


  • Since these gluten free tortillas have no preservatives in them, they will not last long. It is best to make just enough for your needs. If you have extras, eat them within a day of making them for best results.

  • You can also add spices to your tortillas for extra flavor. Taco seasoning, red pepper, and/or a few shakes of hot sauce all work well.
