You don’t need natural curls — or an ocean — to achieve a beachy look. You can take your hair from straight to waves with the help of a little spray and a good curling iron.

Tease hair

Prep your hair by using a teasing brush to separate locks and add a little volume. Brush down to get your hair soft and ready for curling. Then you can take a section of hair and brush in the opposite direction towards your head. This creates more fullness and volume but make sure you don’t tangle your hair in the process.

Spray roots with dry shampoo

This is optional, but spraying the roots of your hair with a little dry shampoo soaks up any oils or greasiness. It adds just enough stiffness and volume to make your hair look freshly blown dry, a life saver on busy mornings. In brand tests, this dry shampoo tops the charts. After you spray the shampoo, run your fingers through your roots and plump your locks to make sure it’s dry.

Curling waves

Depending on the length of your hair and the size of the waves you want, you can use either a narrow or wide curling iron. A large barrel works well on longer hair and delivers big loose waves while a skinny or medium curling iron works well for short and mid-length hair. Using your curling iron of choice (pictured is a 1-inch Conair), grab a 1-inch section of hair and start wrapping it around the curling iron a few inches away from the base of your head. Keep wrapping until you get near the end, then clip the lock of hair inside the curling iron, leaving a few inches at the end sticking out. This gives you the desired beachy organic look versus the common corkscrew curl.

You can start at the bottom layers of your hair and work your way to the top layers until all of your locks have met the curling iron. Touch up on the first sections if needed.

Finger comb through locks

Comb through the finished curls with your fingers to separate them into additional sections and create a natural-looking tousled finish.
