The classic vanilla milkshake is both easy and quick to prepare, utilizing only two ingredients and requiring no special equipment beyond a kitchen blender. As an occasional decadent treat, especially on a hot day, it’s hard to beat. It’s also an excellent recipe for kids to try.


  • 1 quart vanilla ice cream, softened
  • 1/2 cup whole milk


Scoop ice cream into the canister of a standard kitchen blender.

Add milk.

Place the top on the blender and blend on high until thoroughly mixed, about 3 to 5 minutes.

Pour into a tall glass and serve.


Use the best quality ice cream you can, preferably one with all-natural flavoring.

You can add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to enhance the vanilla flavor.

Proportions can be varied; use more ice cream for a thicker shake, more milk for a thinner one.

For an even richer milkshake, use half-and-half or even cream in place of milk. For a slightly lower-fat version, go with 2 percent milk.

If you do not have a standard kitchen blender, you can use an immersion blender to mix your milkshake. Use a high-sided bowl or metal beverage canister and watch for splashing.


If you’re assisting children with this recipe, supervise their use of the blender closely. Make sure they do not run the blender with the cap off or put anything hard — spoons, spatulas, fingers — in the blender canister while it’s running.
