Chocolate martinis are all about fun. No pretension over vodka versus gin, no James Bond-induced confusion over shaking the martini or stirring it, and no rules — it just has to taste good. Of course, “martini” is used loosely here; chocolate is the star of this cocktail, while the base spirit — vodka, gin, rum or whiskey — simply puts it on a pedestal. Special flavorings, a bitter, sweet or sour element that pairs with the main ingredient, give way to experimentation and let you personalize the chocolate martini.

Garnish the martini glass if desired. Moisten the rim of the glass and dip it in sweetened cocoa mix or create a chocolate spiral around the interior. To decorate the glass with a chocolate spiral, squeeze chocolate syrup around the inside while rotating it by the stem.

Muddle fresh mint, melissa or spearmint leaves against the interior of the cocktail strainer, if desired. Muddling herbs isn’t required, but it incorporates an aroma that meets your nose right before you drink, and adds to the overall flavor experience.

Add 1 part base liquor to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Just about any spirit works; use a chocolate-friendly flavored vodka or rum, such as raspberry or coconut, to complement the chocolate. If you want the chocolate to stand out, use regular vodka, light rum, whiskey or brandy. One part in a chocolate martini equals one 2-ounce shot of base spirit.

Add 1/2 part chocolate liqueur.

Add 1/2 part special flavorings. Special flavorings complement the base spirit and modifying agent, in this case chocolate liqueur. For example, coffee liqueur, Irish cream and creme de menthe all work in a chocolate martini, but it ultimately depends on your taste.

Shake the chocolate martini to mix and strain it into the glass. Garnish with a dollop of fresh cream, chocolate shavings or another element that ties to the drink. For example, if you muddled the cocktail shaker with mint or used creme de menthe, add a fresh mint leaf or two.


Add 1 part each vanilla-flavored vodka and chocolate liqueur to a cocktail shaker of ice.

Shake to mix and strain the martini in a martini glass.

Garnish with chocolate shavings and fresh herb mint.
