The bandeau top dress is a popular strapless style that makes an appearance in summer catwalk collections every few years due to its versatility and practicality. The bandeau top dress is also very feminine, flattering and lightweight, which makes it a staple in the summer wardrobe of many women. Fortunately, the bandeau top dress is a simple pattern that can be constructed at home in under an hour with a few basic sewing supplies.

Things You'll Need

Take three separate measurements for the dress with a measuring tape. Measure around the bust, between the armpit and just below the bust and from just below the bust to just above the knee. Add half an inch to each of your measurements for seam allowances.

Lay the fabric on a flat surface in front of you. Draw a straight horizontal line half the size of the measurement around your bust with fabric chalk. Draw a vertical line straight down from both ends of the horizontal line in the size of the measurement between the armpit and just below the bust. Draw another horizontal line between the two vertical lines to make a rectangle shape. Draw one more rectangle shape with exactly the same measurements on the fabric.

Draw a straight horizontal line half the size of the measurement around your bust with fabric chalk. Draw a straight line from each end of the horizontal line in a 70 to 75 degree angle towards the bottom left and bottom right corner of the fabric the same size as the length measurement from just below the bust to just above the knee. You should now have a shape that looks like an upper case “A.” Draw one more shape with exactly the same measurements on the fabric with your fabric chalk.

Cut around the dress template with your sewing scissors. Place the two larger pieces of fabric for the skirt of the dress to one side.

Place one piece of the bandeau top fabric on top of the other with the right sides of the fabric facing inwards. Pin the side seams of the top together with sewing pins.

Fold the fabric allocated for the neckline over and pin into place with sewing pins.

Place the raw edge at the bottom of the bandeau top on top of the raw edge at the top of the skirt. Pin the bandeau top to the skirt with sewing pins, making sure that you leave a gap through the middle of the dress for your body.

Sew the side seams, hem and neckline of the dress with a straight stitch on your sewing machine. Sew the bandeau top to the skirt with a straight stitch on your sewing machine. Sew slowly and remove the sewing pins as you go.
