If you need a fresh, in-your-face style, nothing says edgy, retro glamour like psychobilly fashion. Influenced by punk, rockabilly and pin-up traditions, psychobilly requires bright lips, big hair, killer shoes and a splash of sass to pull off. Reinvent your style with these quick pyschobilly makeover ideas.
Little Red Riding Lip
Pulling off psychobilly style requires some solid pin-up makeup. Apply a nude eyeshadow to your upper lid and add a flick of liquid gel eyeliner to your upper lash line. Draw the eyeliner to the outer corner and flick upwards to create a cat eye. Sweep rosy blush on the apples of your cheeks and a fiery red lipstick to your lips. Fill in your eyebrows with brow powder. Gentlemen, shave off any facial hair and keep your skin moisturized. For some extra authenticity, add some long, trimmed sideburns.
To go along with that fabulous face, you’ll need the right hair. Men should apply some styling cream or wax to their hair and then shape it into a James Dean-inspired quiff. With a comb, create a deep side part and comb the hair back keeping the volume intact. For a more exaggerated look, keep the sides of the hair short and grow out the hair on top of the head for a more punk-inspired ‘do.
Ladies can put hair up in hot rollers for about 15 minutes. Take out the rollers and create a deep side part, then tousle for ‘50s-inspired volume. Flat iron your tresses and pull them back into a sleek, high ponytail. If you have bangs, style with a flat iron and allow them to frame your face. Alternatively, curl your bangs and roll them back up and over your head and pin in place.
Retro Punk Pop
Form-fitting dresses in red and black that hit just to the knee will hug all the right curves. Pair with a leather motorcycle jacket with zippers and hardware detailing. Gents should look for skinny stovepipe trousers in black, or a dark blue jeans, folded with deep cuffs. Top them off with a long-sleeve button up shirt in denim or plaid (don’t forget to roll up the sleeves). Alternatively, pair a white undershirt with a leather biker jacket for an cool cat, greaser look.
When accessorizing, patent leather pumps in cherry red or black with little bow or skull designs epitomize the psychobilly look. Alternatively, pull out a pair of big leather boots with intricate lacing designs for a heavier style. Add some chunky earrings and some large flowers in your hair. Gents can kick back in some wing tip shoes, combat boots or creepers for a stylized twist. Finish off the look with suspenders, flat caps and skinny ties.
