Being pregnant can be an uncomfortable and at times, stressful, experience. A nice massage is good for the mom and baby if it is done correctly and with care. Always ask your obstetrician before undergoing a prenatal massage as some pregnancy conditions could be aggravated by massage.

Have your pregnant mommy lie down in a comfortable position. Lying on the back is not good for circulation in pregnancy. Try to help the mother find a comfortable position lying on her side with pillows propped up behind her back for support.
Use gentle pressure. A prenatal massage should not be done with much pressure and should not cause any pain. Use a gentle touch that is slightly firm.
Massage the neck area, the shoulders, and arms. These areas hold a lot of tension. Rub with a gentle pressure the muscles at the base of the neck and top of the shoulders. Give a gentle rub to the arms, smoothing in some unscented oil for added relaxation.
Gently smooth some unscented oil onto the mother’s belly. The stomach can feel very tight and itchy in pregnancy and a nice rubbing with oil can help soothe this discomfort. Do not use any sort of pressure, simply rub some oil into the skin.
Massage the back, especially the lower back, with gently pressure. The back is a great source of pain during pregnancy as it is supporting a lot of extra weight. Pay special attention to the muscles of the lower back using gentle, even pressure.
Massage the muscles of the legs and calves. Using plenty of unscented oil, give the legs a good rub down and some gentle pressure in circles. Tired legs with extra pressure one them will appreciate the attention. Be careful to avoid the ankle area when massaging the legs as this may be a trigger area for contractions.
Massage the feet. Pregnancy does a number on a mother’s feet and finishing off with a great foot massage will complete the relaxing effect. Avoid the ankles, but don’t forget the base of the feet, especially the balls of the feet. A firm pressure will be appreciated in this area.
