The long messy hair look is not as easy to achieve as it seems. Messy hair requires the right balance of volume, body and movement. The longer your hair, the heavier it is. Unless you have naturally full-bodied hair, the longer your hair is the more effort and product it will take to maintain your hairstyle. Nevertheless, once you begin achieving the sexy messy look, the easier it will become for you to recreate it.

Things You'll Need

Go to a salon or barber shop and have the hairstylist cut your hair in layers to create texture if you do not already have a textured style. Texture and layers are important in achieving the messy look — it gives your hair dimension and body. Without texture your hair will be flat and it is difficult to achieve a controlled messy style.

Wash and condition your hair using products specific for your hair type. For example, if you have flat hair, use a shampoo and conditioner that adds body. If you have dry hair, use moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

Towel dry your hair to remove excess water. Lift locks of hair up and blow dry them pointing the blow dryer underneath the locks near the scalp. Blow drying the hair up gives the hair fuller body and volume.

Wet your fingertips with a half-dollar-sized amount of gel, mousse, wax or pomade. Work the product into your hair evenly. Arrange the locks of your hair around using your fingertips in front of a mirror. Continue until you achieve the look you desire. Add more product if necessary.

Lightly spray your hair with hairspray holding the bottle 12 inches away. Let your hair dry naturally as the product sets and the style solidifies.
