Managing and styling coarse hair can be laborious because hair simply does not like to retain moisture. If you have coarse hair, you are probably sick to death of using damaging flat irons and hair dryers to try solve your hair problem. Fortunately, there are ways to make your coarse hair shiny, smooth and manageable. Stick to a healthy hair routine and your coarse hair will be flowing in no time.

Things You'll Need

Shampoo your hair with a moisturizing straightening shampoo. This will start to work in the shower, so you have less work to do when you get out. Follow this with a moisturizing conditioner.

Apply a leave-in conditioner after you shower and use a wide-tooth comb to comb it through your hair.

Blow-dry your hair with a professional ceramic blow dryer. Use your concentrator nozzle attachment to direct the flow of the heat to the specific area you are drying. Always aim the hair dryer down so you don’t create frizz. Use a large, round brush with boar bristles to smooth the hair while drying.

Apply a cream formula heat protectant and flat iron your hair with a ceramic straightener. Try One ‘n Only Ceramic Silk Flat Iron Creme, Redken Align 12 Straightening Lotion or Kiehl’s Heat Protective Silk Straightening Cream. You can purchase these and other protective straightening products at a beauty supply store.

Straighten your hair as little as possible. Wash your hair every other day so you don’t have to expose it to the heat of the straightener every day, which will cause damage and further dryness.

Apply a moisturizing mask to your hair once a week. You can make one at home with olive oil. Simply apply olive oil all over your hair and cover it with a shower cap. Rinse it out after 30 minutes.

Ask you hair stylist to reduce the volume of your hair with thinning shears. This will reduce the thickness of you hair and make it more manageable.
