Many people like their okra fried. This side dish can often be found at home-cooking restaurants, but you can save money by making it at home on your own. All you need is a few ingredients and a little bit of time.

Things You'll Need

Put enough cooking oil in the bottom of your skillet to completely cover the bottom, about an 1/8 inch in depth. Place on medium heat.

Rub the okra with your hands under running tap water to clean the vegetable. Cut off and discard the okra stems. Cut the rest of the okra into 1/2 inch pieces. Do not dry.

Pour cornmeal into the shallow bowl or dish, then dredge the okra pieces in the cornmeal.

Place the cornmeal-coated okra into the hot oil. Be careful not to let any hot oil splash you as you drop the okra in. Cook for about five minutes. Turn over with a spatula, and allow it to cook on the other side for an additional five minutes. Continue cooking and turning until the fried okra is golden brown and tender.

Line the serving dish with paper towels, then remove the okra from the oil with the spatula and place it into the serving dish. The paper towels will absorb the excess oil. Sprinkle salt over the okra according to your personal taste.
