How to Fix a Squeaky Leather Purse

By Maggie O'Leary

A squeaky leather purse is attributed to many factors. New leather that's not broken in is often squeaky. Likewise, older leather that's soft and well-worn is sometimes squeaky. Sometimes, the issue is the leather's movement against the metal hardware of the purse; other times, the issue is the leather of the purse rubbing against itself. A squeaky leather purse is simple to rectify, but your efforts must be maintained. This task takes about 30 minutes and should be done at least once a month to keep the leather of your purse soft and supple.

Leather purses need regular care to look good.

Step 1

Place your towel on a flat surface to protect your work area from damage. The towel also protects your purse from color transfer from your table, if the purse is a light color.

Step 2

Clean the purse with leather cleaner. Follow the instructions on the container. Ensure that the purse is clean and dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 3

Test the purse by using it with your belongings in it. If the purse still squeaks, repeat the process. Conditioning the purse gets rid of squeaks and noises.

Step 4

Store the purse in a dust bag or pillowcase in a dry, arid storage area to prevent mold, mildew and odors.

Step 5
