A bun is a classic hairstyle that lends itself to several variations. Women may choose to wear a bun, or chignon, low on the nape of the neck. They may also wear it high at the crown of the head. This hairstyle works well for different hair textures, but is best achieved on hair that is at least shoulder length. Women may also add hair extensions if they feel their hair isn’t long enough to create a thick bun.

Things You'll Need

Comb out tangles through the length of the hair. When creating a bun on curly hair, use the fingers to work out tangles instead of a comb.

Brush the hairline smooth. Gel may be used to smooth down any flyaway hairs if needed.

Pull hair back into a ponytail and secure with an elastic. Placement of the ponytail may be anywhere from the crown of the head all the way to the nape of the neck.

Braid the ponytail to the ends. Use an elastic to secure ends if hair is very fine; this may not be necessary for thick and/or curly hair.

Bring the braid up and begin curling it around the base of the ponytail. Tuck the ends under the bun.

Tuck bobby pins in at the base of the bun. Use two bobby pins per section and crisscross them over one another to make the hold more secure.
