Showing off your lips doesn’t have to take a lot of effort. Perfecting your pout can be done in just a few simple steps. Once you get the technique down, your lips will be sure to stand out and make heads turn.

Things You'll Need

Pick your favorite brightly colored lipstick shade. This can be anything from red to tangerine to fuchsia or plum. Find the best match by choosing a shade that works with your skin tone. If you have a fair complexion, pink shades are flattering. Ladies with olive skin looks gorgeous in plums while women with darker complexions pull of deep reds flawlessly. While working with your skin tone is important, these aren’t hard-and-fast rules, so if you like a shade, wear it with confidence.

Pick the best shade for you by applying a bit of lipstick to your finger tips and placing your fingers next to your mouth. Whichever shade strikes your fancy is the one you should use.

Apply a dab of your favorite hydrating balm to your lips. Lip balms come in many types. If you want to plump your lips, choose a balm with plumping properties to create a larger pout. If you have sensitive skin, choose a balm that’s preservative free. Many natural ingredients like cocoa butter, beeswax and shea butter are incredibly hydrating.

Lightly press a makeup sponge into a pressed powder and apply it to the rim of your mouth. This will create the base for your lipstick.

Use a brightly colored lip liner to line the edges of your lips. Do this slowly and take care to trace your lips precisely. Use a cotton swab coated with makeup remover to clean up any mistakes.

Swipe a lip brush over a lip color that matches your liner. Fill in your lips with this color, starting at the center of your lip and moving outward. Many light coats work better than one heavy one, so take your time. If you don’t have a lipstick brush, apply straight from your lipstick tube.

Blot your lips with a tissue. To give yourself a fuller look, apply a tiny dab of gloss on the top and bottom lip right at the center.

Keep your lipstick with you in case you need to reapply. Bright shades tend to feather as they fade, which results in a not-so-attractive look. Reapply your bold color as necessary to keep your lips bright and beautiful all day.

  • When your lips are bold the rest of your makeup should be minimal. Apply just a bit of foundation, a coat of mascara and a little eyeliner.

  • Feel free to experiment with different shades based on your outfit. A bright pink may look lovely with a floral dress, while a showstopping red can complement a little black dress. Swap out your shades as you see fit.
