Keratin hair treatment and maintenance is recognized for the silky and shiny look it offers, even for women with dry and frizzy hair. Keratin is a protein that naturally occurs in hair and nails. Over time, however, many of the hair products you find in stores strip keratin from hair, leaving it dry and sometimes difficult to manage. A keratin hair treatment aims to replace lost keratin through an exact and lengthy process.

Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo. You may need to do this as many as three times to ensure the hair is completely clean before you apply the keratin solution.

Blow dry your hair lightly to create hair that is more receptive to the keratin solution.

Apply the keratin solution by brushing or combing it into the hair in a fashion similar to dyeing your hair.

Cover your hair with a plastic cap for 20 to 25 minutes to allow the keratin to work itself into your hair.

Remove the shower cap and lightly blow dry your hair once more.

Flat-iron your hair to set the keratin treatment.

Wait at least 72 hours before doing anything that could get your hair wet or bent, including washing your hair, sweating, wearing a pony tail or using bobby pins. In the event your hair does get a little wet, blow dry it and flat-iron it immediately.

Wash and condition your hair with sodium-chloride-free shampoos and conditioners to maintain the keratin. Products with salt can strip away the keratin, reducing the effect and length of effects. There are keratin treatment shampoos and conditioners on the market.

  • If you plan to color your hair, wait at least two weeks from the time you completed the treatment to preserve the effects of the keratin as long as possible.
